How Do I Get a SSN with My TN Visa?

Question: I have an I-94 format TN Visa. How do I get a Social Security Number?

Reply: TN visa workers are eligible to obtain a Social Security Number (SSN). TN visa workers will generally need to apply for their SSN in person at a SSA office. They will generally need the following to apply for the SSN:

  • A completed Application For A Social Security Card (Form SS-5).

  • Two original documents showing identity, age, and TN work authorization. This generally will consist of an original birth certificate or passport, plus the TN I-94 record.

Previously, the SSA advised that non-immigrant workers (like TN visa workers) waited for at least 10 days after their initial entry to the U.S. to allow time for USCBP to enter the non-immigrant’s information into the computer system it shared with the SSA. However, due to USCBP’s I-94 automation efforts, the SSA has stated that the 10-day waiting period is no longer required. AILA Liaison w/SSA (March 2014), AILA InfoNet Doc. No. 14042960.
